Rumi, Mira and Zoe of HUNTR/X are returning to the screen as a sequel to “KPop Demon Hunters” is greenlit for 2029.

Netflix and Sony Pictures Animation finalized a deal to create a second installment to the hit animated film, as first reported by Bloomberg.

Since “KPop Demon Hunters” is an animated film, co-director Chris Appelhans said it takes a “long time” to make to ensure that the expansion of its world-building and characters will be of quality.

“You know one of the best things about animation is you can kind of create imaginary movie stars from scratch, and the writing, the designing, the animating is really hard work — it takes a long time,” he told Entertainment Tonight.

FEATURED STORIES

Appelhans added that the team wants the sequel to remind the audience why they fell in love with its story in the first place.

“We love it, and we’re so thrilled that the audience has really embraced these three girls like real K-pop stars. We want to make sure anytime we see them again, they are as amazing as they’re meant to be,” he said.

Meanwhile, co-director Maggie Kang hoped that the sequel would explore the backstories of Zoey and Mira more. Much of the 2025 film revolves around Rumi’s life as a K-pop star, demon hunter and part demon.

“We’ve set up so much for potential backstory. Obviously, there are a lot of questions that are left unanswered and areas that are not explored, and we had to do that because there’s only so much movie you could tell in 85 minutes,” she told Variety

“This was Rumi’s story, and we have backstories for Zoey and Mira — ones that we actually put in the movie, but it just kind of rejected it. It just wasn’t the movie for those stories,” she continued.

“KPop Demon Hunters” tells the story of the fictional K-pop girl group HUNTR/X and their secret lives as demon hunters. Their once-perfect lives as demon hunters and superstars are interrupted when Gwi-ma sends Saja Boys, a charming boy group that turns out to be soul-sucking demons.

Aside from its story and nod to Korean heritage, it also gained attention for its music, releasing chart-topping hits like “Golden,” “Soda Pop” and “How It’s Done.”

Since its release, the film has bagged several awards including a Golden Globe for Best Animated Motion Picture and Best Original Song, as well as a Critics’ Choice award for Best Animated Feature and Best Song. /ra
