Jasmine Curtis comes out of her sister’s shadow
Now two years in show biz, young actress Jasmine Curtis says she is more confident and no longer relies on her sister, actress-TV host Anne Curtis, to dress her up.
“I get inspiration from other sources now. I follow fashion blogs,” Jasmine tells Living Stars. “I also follow Hollywood stars like Dakota and Elle Fanning, Taylor Momsen, as well as (British actress) Emma Watson.”
She adds: “I’m now more open to trying out new things and a bit more spontaneous when it comes to choosing clothes and shoes.”
At 18, she has starred in two drama series on TV5, and is currently the endorser of top local brands of apparel and cosmetics.
Jasmine, who lives with her mom and brother in Melbourne, Australia, flies to Manila at least five times a year.

Article continues after this advertisementShe gives these fashion tips: “When you buy high heels, make sure to get your size. Try to find comfortable heels. I sometimes prefer wedges to stilettos because they’re easier to walk in. For flats, find cute designs. Try those in fun and bright colors, although it would be better to use plain ones if you want to keep the focus on your outfits.”
She reminds other teenagers to “keep your makeup light and fresh during the day. At night, it’s up to you if you want the smoky eyes of Taylor Momsen or not. Don’t forget to take off your makeup at night and moisturize your face.”
Jasmine reveals that most of her cosmetics are gifts from her sister—like eyeshadow and Wonder Woman bronzers from Mac, and blush from Shu Uemura.
“I like Avon’s Simply Pretty collection because they’re very light on the skin,” Jasmine says. “My favorite lip colors are the Fruit Tingle from Sports Girl and Dewey Rose from Simply Pretty. They have a light tint. I use them to school because they’re natural-looking.”
Colorful bags
“It was my mom who made me buy the bag from Aldo,” Jasmine says. “I really like the color, it’s orange.”
“I bought this at the airport in Melbourne,” recalls Jasmine, showing a Victoria’s Secret bag in hot pink. “I like it because it’s street style. It’s just like the Longchamp piece that I got two years ago as a gift from my manager Betchay Vidanes.”
Fave clothes
Jasmine says she is most comfortable wearing shorts. “I’m a big fan of them. Ate (Anne) likes wearing shorts, too. Hers is even way shorter.”
She wears locally made outfits from Bayo when she’s in Melbourne. “Take this cardigan in leopard print from Bayo, for example,” she says. “It’s still a bit cold there, so I use this instead of wearing a big jacket, which makes moving around more difficult.”
Jasmine says her H&M leather jacket was a gift for her 18th birthday from Anne’s boyfriend, Erwan Heussaff.
Comfy footwear
“Being Australian, it’s just natural for me to wear flip-flops every day,” says Jasmine. “I don’t have preferred colors, but I lean towards beige, black and white.”
“These items from Skechers are really comfortable. They’re the best shoes to use for days when you just feel like walking or going out to shop,” Jasmine says.
Apart from what she gets from her endorsements, Jasmine says she’s lucky to get interesting gifts from fans—like a pair of heels with leopard print from Prima Donna.
“I bought these (black leather) loafers from Zu out of pity for my feet, because I got so tired of walking in high heels all day with my brother,” Jasmine recalls. “I also have some pair of boat shoes by Bob’s From Skechers. They’re very comfortable. I have them in beige and another in purple and gray.”
Gadget gifts
The Grove in Rockwell (Makati City) gave Jasmine a MacBook Air when she bought a condo unit there. A year ago, her school in Melbourne gave her an iPad 2 for raising the most funds for St. Ignatius Day.
“I got an iPhone as a gift from my manager, but my latest, an iPhone 4S, is a gift from Smart Telecommunications,” she adds. “This Olympus PEN EP-3 camera is a proud purchase.”
Her Fuji Film instant camera was a Christmas gift from her friends in Bayo.
Eyewear collection
“I bought this pair of sunnies at the airport last year before coming here, as a reward for myself for finishing my mid-year exams. It’s been my favorite pair. It’s John Lennon-esque,” she says. “Shades don’t always have to be branded. What’s important is that they look flattering. It’s not wise to use super-expensive sunnies when you’re by the beach. You tend to forget them there, anyway.”
Girly scents
“I like Lewis and Pearls colognes, especially the Cherry Blossom and Sweet Paris variants, because they’re very girly and perfect for anyone who likes to wear florals and pink,” says the teener. “My latest bottle of Chance by Chanel is a gift from a fan in California. It’s quite strong, which is what I like because it doesn’t rub off easily.”
