Adele’s ‘Skyfall’

Adele’s take on the latest James Bond theme song – ‘Skyfall’ of the same movie title—brings to my mind other artists who have also performed the theme songs of past Bond movies such as Shirley Bassey and Sheena Easton.

Adele’s sultry approach with her smoky underlying tone makes this one of the sexiest James Bond theme in years.

In ‘Skyfall’, she is able to hold her own amidst the rich instrumentation of a 77-piece orchestra which backs her up but which doesn’t drown out her voice. She “owns” the song. Even the back-up singers are barely audible.

Adele composed the song with the help of “Rolling in the Deep” collaborator Paul Epworth.  To the best of my recollection, this is one of the most memorable theme songs of a James Bond movie–in the recent years–because previous artists who had done the theme songs before have become forgotten at best or were just plain terrible like Madonna’s “Die Another Day”.

In my opinion, Adele is the number one British singer currently. I still remember when her song “Rolling in the Deep” hit the radio stations, the music channels, and record stores. The song was being played everywhere. It might have been overplayed but when you hear something that different and raw, naturally people would want to play it and hear it again and again.

The same now goes for ‘Skyfall’. The movie has yet to be shown in the Philippines, yet Adele’s song is already making the waves.  This will not only help in creating a buzz for the upcoming movie itself and heightening the moviegoers’ interest even more but it keeps Adele’s name in the forefront again as it was when Adele broke into the consciousness of people with her song “Rolling in the Deep”.

It is rumored that it would take a few more years before she releases a new album because she wishes to take some time off as she and boyfriend Simon Konecki welcome a baby. On the other hand, Adele fans will also be busy in the meantime listening to and enjoying her latest song ‘Skyfall’.

On an added note, and interestingly enough Adele is the first British singer to sing a James Bond theme song in more than 25 years! In more ways than one, the James Bond theme song has finally come home!
