Pop star Sabrina Carpenter is reportedly in discussions to take on a role in the upcoming third installment of “Mamma Mia.”
Deadline reported that film producer Judy Craymer stated she could envision Carpenter in a part for the third film.
“She’d be a goddess or some relation who would look very much like Meryl Streep,” she said. “It’ll happen when it happens.”
Despite speculation that the third film might not come to fruition, Craymer clarified that “Mamma Mia 3” is still in development.
“We know what we want to do with the movie, and it will happen,” the producer stressed. “I mean, we brought together this amazing group of movie stars who were all connected through.”
Craymer also hinted that Meryl Streep might reprise her role as Donna Sheridan, even though the character is suggested to be deceased in the second film, “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again” (2018).
In the story, Amanda Seyfried plays Sophie, the daughter of Streep’s character. Despite Carpenter’s role not being set yet, fans hope that the “Espresso” singer will play Sophie’s daughter.
In an interview last year, Seyfried said she is open to the idea of her and Carpenter playing mother and daughter.
“I’m an actor. I’ll do it. If Sabrina Carpenter wants to play my daughter, I’ll make it happen. It’s fine. She’s… I’m a big fan,” she told Will Ganss on ABC News.
Over the years, Carpenter has been vocal about her love for ABBA, whose songs have been heavily showcased in the film franchise.
The pop star has performed ABBA songs at her tours, worn costumes from ABBA’s Voyage concert, and even named her two cats after the band’s founders Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus.
The “Mamma Mia” films have become a jukebox staple since their release. The first movie was the highest-grossing musical film in 2008 until “Beauty and the Beast” surpassed it nearly ten years later. /edv
