Is this ‘American Idol’s’ last stand or its return to glory?

The reality talent show that started the resurgence of singing competitions on television and ultimately became a cultural phenomenon is set to return for its 12^th season. And what others are saying is that it could even be their final season if the ratings continue to fall.

This time, with a panel of judges that consists of some of the biggest pop artists at present such as eclectic hip-hop artist Nicki Minaj, the multi-awarded country singer Keith Urban, the iconic diva Mariah Carey and the only remaining original judge Randy Jackson to round off the judging panel, it could change the course of the show.

Some might be asking “Why did they keep randy still?” Well, originally, the plan was supposed to be Enrique Iglesias who would replace Randy Jackson, but contract negotiations fell short and the season was nearing. That is why they brought back Randy.

Now with other reality talent shows on air like ‘The X-factor’ and ‘The Voice’ providing more competition and being the competition itself, this has given aspiring singers options to choose from and place their luck in.

With all of these said, can American Idol meet the viewers’ high expectations and get back the ratings it once had and once again become the dominant reality search show it was years ago?

Based on the presence alone of the new judges, the show can get definitely garner new interest from different age demographics and that would result in an increase of viewership which would equal a much needed ratings boost. But in the end, it is really all about the contestants they let pass and who get to the next level and then to the finals.

In my opinion, there lies the key for continued success. Since a good number of American Idol alumni have successful careers already and established themselves enough to shake off the tag of just being a product of the show. Just to name the standouts in terms of talent are the likes of Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson, Kelly Clarkson and my personal favorite, Chris Daughtry. Most of these artists didn’t even finish last or win the big one! But they all have made a name for themselves and American Idol became their launching pad for success.

Hopefully they can produce more artists like the aforementioned for many years to come!
