Ogie Diaz did not support Willie Revillame and Phillip Salvador’s senate bids despite them coming from the same industry, saying the two aspirants’ campaign approach did not sit well with him.
The actor-showbiz insider spoke about this during an interview with journalist Christian Esguerra on the latter’s “Facts First” political vlog on Monday, May 19.
The topic was brought up after Esguerra asked Diaz his sentiment on the results of the recent midterm elections.
“I’m happy because Bam [Aquino] and Kiko Pangilinan were among those who won the Senate race despite not figuring in prior surveys. I really campaigned for them,” Diaz said.
Esguerra then asked if the actor-showbiz insider—who said he also voted for Erwin Tulfo, Heidi Mendoza and Luke Espiritu—supported Revillame and Salvador.
“I did not vote for them even when we came from the same industry. I’m sorry but I did not like what they were saying and how they campaigned for themselves. They seem to have forgotten that the people are keeping tabs on them,” he said.
Diaz underscored that everyone is entitled to support the candidates they believe in and, in the same manner, they also have the right to choose not to support a senatorial candidate.
Diaz further stressed that his decision not to support Revillame was mostly influenced by how the latter presented himself as a candidate.
He, nonetheless, acknowledged having a “bad history” with Revillame, who slammed him on air in 2023 with an “utang na loob” (debt of gratitude) remark. Revillame’s remark came after Diaz supposedly criticized him.
During the interview, Diaz also took a swipe at Revillame’s previous controversial statements about how there are already so many laws, and at how the TV host responded to questions about his platforms with another question.
Diaz then spoke in general about celebrities venturing into public service, “‘Wag nating daanin sa pagpapatawa. Ilabas mo rin ‘yung utak mo, ‘wag puro puso.” (Let us not use comedy in politics. Show your brains and do not rely on emotions alone.)
Meanwhile, Diaz also revealed in the interview that he spoke to Luis Manzano—another celebrity who ran for a public post during the recent elections but failed—to just stay in show business where the people applaud for him. /edv
