Broadcaster Emil Sumangil lamented the unfortunate fate of his relative, Philipp Santiago II, who died while attempting to reach the peak of Mount Everest in Nepal.

Santiago, a member of the Mountaineering Association of Krishnanagar–Snowy Everest Expedition 2025, reportedly passed just before his last push for the summit of the world’s highest peak. The cause of death was not immediately known to the public.

“Ang aming mga mata, na puno nuon ng saya, nang pakawalan ka namin nuon patungong NEPAL… lumuluha ngayon, at namumugto pa,” Sumangil, who is reportedly Santiago’s cousin, wrote on his Instagram page on Thursday, May 15, while showing a photo of their family before Santiago flew for his Mt. Everest quest.

(Our eyes that were filled with joy when we sent you off for Nepal, are now crying.)

“Isama niyo po kami sa inyong panalangin… Malagpasan namin kaagad ang pait at pighati sa tulong ninyo at higit sa lahat ng Mahal na Diyos Ama,” he continued.

(Please include us in your prayers. May we overcome this bitterness and pain with help from you and most of all from God our Father.)

Sumangil’s prior posts included a glimpse of Santiago a day before he was expected to reach the summit. Santiago was seen with an avalanche wound on his face.

According to The Himalayan Times, Santiago is the first Mount Everest foreign casualty of this year’s climbing season.  /ra
