Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson are set to tackle their final case as they return to their roles as the real-life paranormal investigators Lorraine and Ed Warren, respectively, in the fourth and final film of the franchise, “The Conjuring: Last Rites.”
Warner Bros. released the official trailer for “The Conjuring: Last Rites” on Friday, May 9, giving a glimpse into the terrifying final case that the couple investigated, which some fans speculate could lead to a major death.
The trailer opens with Ed giving the warning, “Don’t touch anything,” as he walks into their infamous artifact room, where the haunted and cursed objects from their investigations are stored, including the demonic doll Annabelle.
The clip continues to set the tone as Ed and Lorraine narrate parts of the trailer, reflecting on the thousands of cases they have handled: “Every case is different. Every family is different,” Ed says before Lorraine warns, “Something has changed. Something is different.”
The trailer features jump scares and intense exorcism scenes before it concludes with Ed performing a dramatic exorcism and Lorraine being confronted by a sinister force telling her, “We’ve been waiting so patiently for you.”
“Discover why this case was their last,” the trailer flashes on the screen.
For the fourth installment, Farmiga and Wilson are joined by Ben Hardy (“X-Men: Apocalypse”) and Mia Tomlinson (“The Beast Must Die”), who are new to the franchise.
The Conjuring movies — the 2013 original, 2016’s “The Conjuring 2,” 2021’s “The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It,” and “The Conjuring: Last Rites” — are loosely based on real-life cases that the Warrens investigated during their careers.
To date, the franchise has grossed over $2 billion, including spin-offs “The Nun” (2018), “Annabelle” (2014) and “The Curse of La Llorona” (2019), making it the highest-grossing horror franchise in history.
“The Conjuring: Last Rites” opens in Philippine cinemas on Sept. 3. /ra
