Eugene goes back to her roots

EUGENE Domingo, holding her special citation, wants to take “Bona” out-of-town or abroad. GRIG MONTEGRANDE

Eugene “Uge” Domingo was ecstatic that her play “Bona” was extended (last weekend). It came as no surprise to Uge’s legions of fans because, as expected, she never failed to deliver.

I’m pretty sure there would be a repeat. It’s quite a feat considering that Pinoys are more drawn to the movies than to theater. Even if Uge has achieved commercial success on the big screen, she took time out to go back to her roots. No wonder the theater world loves her in return. As she pays it forward, Uge hasn’t forgotten to look back.

What did Nora Aunor, the original Bona, say to you after she watched your portrayal?

Ms Nora watched twice. She said she even enjoyed it more the second time. I wanted her to have fun and to like it—and she did! Stars like her have been entertaining the country for so many decades, it’s but right for her to be entertained this time. I am glad to have had that opportunity on the PETA stage via “Bona” in the contemporary setting. The whole experience was surreal with Ms Nora in the audience. My whole theatrical experience this time was amazing and unforgettable. It would be a dream-come-true to do a comedy film with her.

What do you think was the secret to “Bona’s” success?

From the very start, my goal was to bring more people to come to the theater, especially those who have not yet experienced watching a play. I learned that many were repeaters and watched again with a different companion. “Bona” was a crowd-pleaser. It was relatable, modern and had many surprises. It was about a fan played by me who fell for a young wanna-be star portrayed by one of our finest young actors, Edgar Allan Guzman, who’s such a natural. It was a roller-coaster ride of emotions, and hopefully after having watched it, you could bring home something to think about.

What’s something new that you’ve learned from the “Bona” experience?

The most important lesson I’ve learned from the play, and because I have played Bona, is to understand how important our supporters, friends and fans are in the business. They are the life and blood of this industry. We cater to them and we should always be thankful to them. As a celebrity, I want my supporters to be inspired by what I do. Likewise, I want to be inspired, too, by the people I admire. Needless to say, I’m also a fan.

Will there be a repeat since there’s public clamor for it?

It’s been running for six weekends already since July. In Metro Manila, no more repeats. But I am open to bringing “Bona” out of town or even out of the country so our kababayan can enjoy it, too.
