An impromptu rendition of Nora Aunor’s music was the fitting way to cap off the second day of the public viewing of her wake, held at the Heritage Park in Taguig on Sunday, April 20.

Droves of fans — also known as Noranians — braved the tingling heat to see a glimpse of the late Superstar on the second day of the public viewing of her wake, with some lining up hours before the scheduled 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. timeslot.

According to authorities, fans entered by batches inside the wake, approximately 20 to 40 per group, to ensure order at the Heritage Park.

Many senior citizens were accompanied either by their children, relatives, or grandchildren at the wake. Despite the long lines and blistering heat, a lot of them were open for quick interviews or a brief chat of how they became a fan of the late National Artist.

Meanwhile, others came from far areas in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao just to witness the late screen veteran for the last time.

“Kahit napakalayo namin, tiniis namin pumunta dito para makita lamang ang aming iniidolo dahil minahal siya ng masang Pilipino,” one RR Arcidera from Samar told INQUIRER.net in an interview. “Talagang sabi ko, ‘Ate Guy, ito ang huling sandali na makita ka,’ isang fans club na napakalayo [ng pinanggalingan] at kahit malayo, pinursige namin.”

(Even if we came from far areas, we were willing to go here just to witness our idol because the Filipino masses love her. I said, “Ate Guy, this is the last time I’ll see you,” a fan club that came from a far location. There may be a huge distance, but we braved it.)

Darling of the nation

Despite the crowd, Aunor’s daughter Matet de Leon said she is “not surprised” that many people have been expressive of their love toward the Superstar during an ambush interview.

“Galing tayo sa Mahal na Araw tapos they went out of their way nang bongga para makarating dito at maparating kay Mommy ang pagmamahal nila. We appreciate all of them — bawat isa sa kanila (We just came from Holy Week, and they really went out of their way to be here and to show their love to Mommy. We appreciate all of them — every one of them),” she added.

The lines of Noranians doubled by around 1:00 p.m., with authorities stationed at different parts of the venue.

As the public viewing was about to end at four in the afternoon, many fans took the time to interact and sing “Superstar ng Buhay Ko” and “Handog.”

Aunor died of acute respiratory failure on Wednesday, April 16, according to her son Ian de Leon. She was 71 years old.

The late screen veteran’s wake will continue until Monday, April 21, and her internment and state funeral will be held on April 22. Further details are yet to be revealed.
