‘The Croods 2’ creatives to direct animated film on Philippine mythology

Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado, known for their work on “The Croods: A New Age” and “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish,” are set to bring Filipino mythology to the big screen with the upcoming animated feature “Forgotten Island.”
Variety recently reported that the duo will write and direct the film, marking Mercado’s first full directing credit.
As of this writing, more details about the animated feature are kept under wraps, but the story is expected to spotlight the rich folklore of the Philippines.

“A broad party comedy adventure that transports the film’s protagonists to a long forgotten, magical island rooted in Philippine mythology,” wrote the outlet.
Crawford took to his Instagram page to celebrate the news, describing “Forgotten Island” as a “personal story” for both him and Mercado.
“It’s happening! This has been a passion project of ours for the past four years, and now we’re official! ‘Forgotten Island’ promises to be a wild adventure, but it is also a very personal story for both of us. We have a kick-ass crew and can’t wait to see you in theaters,” he wrote.

“Forgotten Island” will be part of DreamWorks Animation’s upcoming slate, the studio behind the Academy Award-winning “The Wild Robot,” “Kung Fu Panda 2,” “Shark Tale,” and the “Shrek” movie series.
Later this year, the studio will release “The Bad Guys 2” movie and the live-action remake of “How to Train Your Dragon.”
“Forgotten Island” is set to hit cinemas on September 25, 2026.
