This has got to be the funniest movie yet to hit the cinemas this year.
Despite the proliferation of cutesy romcoms, director Paul Feig and producer Judd Apatow have whipped up an audacious take on all that fuss that goes on before weddings that will have everyone in the cinemas gasping for air.
The movie’s co-writer Kristin Wiig plays the role of Annie who will need to step up her game as maid of honor to her best friend Lillian’s (Maya Rudolph) upcoming wedding. With Annie’s love and financial problems, you can’t help but expect that she will be at her wit’s end before the film even reaches its close—but not without taking everyone on a ridiculously funny ride down the aisle.
As if Annie’s issues on being unattached, broke and her business venture’s hitting rock bottom weren’t enough for her to handle, she now has to muster all her wits to play the excited maid of honor for Lillian. But the ordeal is not enough without a rival that came in the form of Lillian’s new friend Helen (Rose Byrne), who seems to have mastered the role of the maid of honor down to the smallest detail.
And so the movie zeroes in on the competition among the bridesmaids and it is probably this which sets it apart from other romcoms wherein the focus really is, for the female lead to get her man. In Bridesmaids, writers Wiig and Annie Mumulo shine the spotlight on Annie’s struggle to beat Helen’s efforts to win over Lillian and to eventually make herself feel better.
Other bridesmaids joining Annie’s journey are Megan (Melissa McCarthy), Rita (Wendi McLendon-Covey) and Becca (Ellie Kemper) who all contribute gags to the movie even while showing their insecurities as married or unattached bridesmaids.
Even after the terrible food poisoning, a failed Vegas trip, and a hysterical breakdown at Lillian’s bridal shower, things do eventually turn out fine for Annie as she comes to terms with life’s issues and in the process ditches “friend-with-benefits” Ted (Jon Hamm) for good cop Chris O’Dowd (Officer Rhodes).
So go catch this unruly horde of bridesmaids as they strut down SM Cinemas near you.
