Award-winning actress Meryl Streep is reported to be in negotiations to play Aslan the Great Lion in Greta Gerwig upcoming “Narnia” film adaptation.
Deadline reported that Streep is currently in deliberation with the film’s executives about the role but that they have yet to arrive at an agreement.
“We have confirmed with sources. However, we understand that they’re not quite at the offer stage yet,” wrote the outlet.
In C.S. Lewis novel series “The Chronicles of Narnia,” Aslan is originally a male character that is often seen as an allegory for Jesus as he serves as “Narnia’s guardian and a guide for the human children.”
Aside from Streep, “James Bond” actor Daniel Craig and singer-songwriter Charli XCX are said to also be in talks for the roles of Digory’s uncle and Jadis, the White Witch, respectively.
If the casting pushes through, it will be a reunion for Streep and Gerwig after working in the 2019 hit “Little Women.”
Gerwig will be adapting “The Magician’s Nephew,” which is the sixth book in Lewis’ novel that tells the story of how Narnia was discovered.
The film will be Gerwig’s first work since her 2023 blockbuster “Barbie,” which earned over $1.4 billion at the global box office.
Meanwhile, Streep was last seen on the big screen through the 2021 political satire black comedy “Don’t Look Up.”
The Academy Award-winning actress recently starred in the mystery comedy drama series “Only Murders in the Building.”
