The late actresses Michelle Trachtenberg, Shannen Doherty, and Olivia Hussey were left out of the “In Memoriam” segment of this year’s Oscars, which honors the industry’s departed stars and film workers.
The Oscars, which took place at the Dolby Theatre on March 2 (morning of March 3 in the Philippines) honored several stars, filmmakers, producers, and film workers who died over the past year, including Gene Hackman, who only recently died under mysterious circumstances.
Tributes pour in for Hackman, who is best known for his appearances in the “Superman” films and “Bonnie and Clyde,” and whom Morgan Freeman described as a “generous dear friend” whose talent can “elevate everyone’s work.”
Hackman and Freeman starred together in the films “Unforgiven” (1992) and “Under Suspicion” (2000).
“Like everyone who shared a scene with him, I discovered he was a generous performer, a man whose talent elevated everyone’s work. He won two Oscars, but more importantly, he captured the hearts of film lovers around the world,” Freeman said.
“Gene always said, ‘I don’t think about legacy, I just hope people remember me as someone who tried to do good work.’ So, I believe I speak for all of us when I say, Gene, you will be remembered for that and so much more,” he continued.
Hackman was earlier found dead with his wife Betsy Arakawa and his German Shepherd in his Santa Fe, Mexico home. The cause of his death remains unknown, and there were neither any signs of carbon monoxide poisoning nor external trauma on his body.
Also included in the In Memoriam segment were Dame Maggie Smith, Donald Sutherland, Bob Newhart, Teri Garr, and James Earl Jones, to name a few.
However, it was noted that Trachtenberg, Doherty, and Hussey, as well as “Candyman” star Tony Todd and “Lord of the Rings” star Bernard Hill.
Trachtenberg is best known for her appearances in the TV series “Gossip Girl,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Harriet The Spy,” and the films “Black Christmas,” “Ice Princess,” and “Mysterious Skin.” Meanwhile, Doherty starred in notable projects such as “Beverly Hills, 90210,” “Charmed,” “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” “Little House on the Prairie,” and “Mallrats.”
On the other hand, Hussey is best known for portraying Juliet in the 1968 adaptation of “Romeo and Juliet,” as well as Mary in “Jesus of Nazareth.”
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the executive producers of the Oscars do not get to choose who makes it to the awards ceremony’s In Memoriam segment. The task belongs to its executive committee representing the 19 Academy branches, although their names and contact details are “a closely guarded secret.”
It was also reported that it will be decided through rounds of screening interviews, with a source to the US-based publication stating that a celebrity and film worker has a bigger chance of being included if they received an award or nomination by the Academy.
