The 2002 coming-of-age romantic drama “A Walk to Remember” is set to receive a fresh take, as film distribution company Monarch Media confirmed that a remake is officially in development.
Deadline reported that the film company has secured the rights to “A Walk to Remember,” with plans to develop a reboot together with the film’s original producers Denise Di Novi and Hunt Lowry.
“I am so grateful to Steve [Barnett] and Monarch Media for giving all of us the opportunity to bring this enduring and inspirational story of faith, hope and love to a new generation, all qualities we need now more than ever,” Di Novi said in a statement.
The film, which was directed by Adam Shankman, was adapted from the 1999 bestseller novel by Nicholas Sparks. The story follows Landon Carter (Shane West), a rebellious high schooler who falls in love with a faith-driven girl, Jamie Sullivan (Mandy Moore), with whom he navigates the power of love amidst illness and death.

In 2022, Moore told People Magazine that she would “love” to see a new version of “A Walk to Remember,” adding that she could envision global pop star Olivia Rodrigo in the role of her then character.
“I don’t know, Olivia Rodrigo or something like that,” she said at the time. “Someone could redo this film. I would love to see it. It’s been long enough that I feel like we’ve earned our place in cinematic history for a reboot at this point.”
Aside from amassing $47 million in the worldwide box office, the 2002 film remains one of the most popular titles in the modern rom-com canon to this day, with Us Weekly labeling it as one of the 30 most romantic movies of all time.
Moore’s performance in the film earned her a few accolades including MTV Movie Awards’ Best Breakthrough Female Performance and Teen Choice Awards’ Breakout Movie Actress. The actress also won the Movie Chemistry award from Teen Choice alongside West.
Meanwhile, the novel version sold 130 million copies worldwide. Sparks’ works have been mostly been adapted to films, but aside from “A Walk to Remember,” his other famous work is “The Notebook,” starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams.
