The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB) said it is opening its doors to help Boss Toyo, Rendon Labador, and other content creators, as they’re set to go mainstream with the launch of Geng Geng Network on D8TV channel.
In a statement on Facebook on Friday, December 20, the government agency reiterated that it will ensure that the people behind Geng Geng Network will abide by its standards while citing Presidential Decree No. 1986.
“As they navigate the world of television, the MTRCB is ready to guide them and ensure compliance with our standards. The MTRCB welcomes Geng Geng Network’s intention to collaborate to ensure adherence to Presidential Decree No. 1986,” it said.
Presidential Decree No. 1986 states that the government agency is responsible for monitoring TV shows, films, and other publicity materials to ensure that it abides by the “contemporary Filipino cultural values” and it falls under the possible criteria suited for the audience.
Despite this, MTRCB said it “appreciates” Geng Geng Network’s efforts in making sure that its programs are aligned with the needed guidelines.
“The Board fully recognizes the influence of both mainstream and digital media in shaping public perception,” it said.
“It is always ready to provide Responsableng Paggabay to all stakeholders within the creative industry, helping to balance creativity and freedom of expression, while ensuring that content is responsible, respectful, and culturally sensitive for Filipino viewers across all media platforms,” it added.
The MTRCB’s statement comes after Boss Toyo, Labrador, and his fellow vloggers announced that they would go mainstream through Geng Geng Network, containing programs with entertainment, fashion, fitness, family, and inspirational-centered themes from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m.
“Totoo ngang may notion na influencer lang ‘yan, vlogger lang ‘yan, lagi kaming nasasabihan nang gan’un. Bakit lagi nila kaming dinudumb down pero pinapanood pa rin kami… we’re here to prove that we’re not just content creators or social media influencers. We’re here to prove na kaya naming magbigay ng saya, entertainment, aral, at drama,” Boss Toyo said of the network’s launch.
(It is true that there’s a certain notion that we’re just influencers or vloggers. We always receive those remarks. Why are we always dumbed down yet people still watch us? We’re here to prove that we’re not just content creators or social media influencers. We’re here to prove that we can give joy, entertainment, lessons, and drama.)
