Tech rehearsal on Wednesday night for “The King and I” felt like a gala presentation, thanks mainly to spirited performances by Bo Cerrudo and Shiela Valderrama in the lead roles. To start with, the beloved Rodgers and Hammerstein musical is anchored on happy tunes, whistled and otherwise, and some things just as wonderful—which these two singer-actors are clearly prepared to deliver. Cerrudo and Valderrama (in photo) are alternating with bigger names Leo Valdez and Monique Wilson during the Resorts World production’s run (that started last night) at the Newport Performing Arts Theater. Judging from the audience response on Wednesday, any night would be a good night to get to know King Mongkut, his wives and children, and Teacher Anna. “The King and I” is a mirthful show that’s a feast for the eyes as well. Be prepared to sing along. Freddie Santos directs. Emmie G. Velarde
