Trigger warning: mentions of sexual harassment.
Claudine Barretto admitted that she was also once a victim of sexual misconduct, as she extended support to Rita Daniela, who recently filed acts of lasciviousness against actor Archie Alemania.
On Instagram, Barretto shared some screenshots of her video call with Daniela, where they appeared to be engaged in an emotional discussion.
Barretto said Daniela has been one of her biggest supporters, as she challenged the latter’s offender to confront her instead.
“I went out of my way to be there for Rita. Why am I in the middle of a crossfire? Because I believe and will protect her. To her perpetrator, ako harapin mo (face me instead)! Apologize before it’s too late, boy,” she wrote in part of her caption.
The 45-year-old actress then urged the public to not “victim blame” as well as the perpetrator to own up to his actions.
“Nakikiusap at nag mamakaawa ako (I plead), please let us not victim blame here. Let’s please show her our compassion and love. I have nothing against the perpetrator and am willing to mediate if Rita wants,” she said.
“If you broke someone, please have the heart to genuinely apologize. It won’t make you less of a man to admit. Choosing to be responsible & owning up to your actions and mistakes will be good for your soul. What you have done is beyond just trauma,” added the actress.
Barretto emphasized that she understands that the perpetrator needs to clear his name but that she is speaking up because she has daughters and was a victim of harassment herself.
“The damage has been done. Makikipag laban ka daw sa korte (You are reportedly going to fight this out in court) to clear your image and name. I respect you doing this for your family. It’s easier to own up and apologize. You have family. I am willing to listen. Not my business but I have daughters. I will always protect anyone who is going through this for I, myself, was a victim years ago! Rita, you are strong & loved. God hears you. I am here for you!!!” she concluded her post.
On Wednesday, Oct. 30, Daniela filed a complaint against Alemania before the Office of the City Prosecutor in Bacoor City, alleging that Alemania sexually violated her by kissing and touching her without consent after a work gathering on Sept. 8.
Meanwhile, Barretto also previously voiced out her support for two other sexual abuse victims, young actor Sandro Muhlach and singer Gerald Santos.
