Renowned Filipino violinist Gilopez Kabayao — who was nominated to be named a National Artist for Music — died after a brief, undisclosed illness, his wife and fellow musician Corazon confirmed. He was 94 years old.
Gilopez died in Iloilo City on Saturday, October 12, according to a statement by his wife on Facebook a day later.
“After more than seven decades of sharing his music propelled by the generosity of spirit that he so selflessly gave to his audience from all walks of life, the curtain now closes on this artist with a mission,” the post read.
“At 94, after a brief illness, Gilopez Kabayao now goes on to join His creator, Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, [on] October 12, 2024, in Iloilo City,” added Corazon.
According to Corazon, Gilopez’s talent in music will be a legacy of classical music and will inspire Filipinos to appreciate the genre.
“The precious legacy of the Philippines’ violin virtuoso and musical crusader, Gilopez Kabayao, has inspired thousands to love and appreciate beautiful Filipino and classical music and his virtuosity on the violin has brought singular honor and prestige to the Philippines,” she wrote.
Meanwhile, the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) paid tribute to Gilopez on Facebook, noting his “remarkable talent and lifelong dedication to music” inspired Filipinos to support their cultural heritage.
“As the first Filipino violinist to perform at the prestigious Carnegie Hall in New York in 1950, Gilopez Kabayao broke new ground and brought pride to the nation. Receiving the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1972 underscored his commitment to being a true artist for the Filipino people, as he brought the beauty of classical music to communities across the country in unconventional venues, breaking down barriers and inspiring a love for the arts,” the post read.
Gilopez was awarded the Gawad CCP Para sa Sining plum in 2008 with his wife, in honor of his contributions to the local music and cultural scene. He was also campaigned to be a National Artist for Music by the Iloilo City government in May 2024.
Gilopez is survived by Corazon, his children Sicilienne, Farida, and Gilberto, sister Marcelita Kabayao Mortensen, grandchild, nieces, and nephews.
