Actress and news anchor Kaladkaren appeared for her nightly primetime newscast as a married woman for the first time on Monday, Sept. 30, debuting not just her new chin-length hairdo, but also her married name when she delivered her reports.
“Ako po si Jervi Wrightson,” the anchor declared when she went on air for TV5’s primetime newscast “Frontline Pilipinas.” The chargen on the screen also flashed her name, as she sheds off the monicker that shot her to fame for her spot-on impressions of award-winning broadcast journalist Karen Davila.
She carried the name Kaladkaren when she joined “Frontline Pilipinas” in June last year, using it as a screen name that stuck to her fans and the general viewers when she joined the entertainment industry.
“So happy I did the newscast today as Jervi Wrightson!!![three crying emojis] New name, new look! This is just the beginning! [red heart emoji][rainbow emoji],” she posted on social media after the Monday telecast.
“As a trans woman in the Philippines, I have never imagined that one day I’ll be able to use my married name on national TV, prime time newscast,” said Kaladkaren, who prefers the pronouns she/her.
It’s not immediately known if she will be dropping “Kaladkaren” for good, or if her use of her real name will only be for her newscast.
Kaladkaren tied the knot with her English beau Luke Wrightson in a cliff-top wedding at the Raven Hall County Hotel in his hometown of North Yorkshire in England on Sept. 8. They have been dating for 12 years before getting married.
In her Instagram post, her husband teased her that he is entitled to royalties for using his surname, but the award-winning actress gave a witty rejoinder.
Her reintroduction as Mrs. Wrightson on TV was well-received by many, including journalist Myrza Sison who commented with a clapping avatar on Facebook.
User JPG Luna on X (formerly Twitter) said, “[pink hearts emoji] this is Monumental! Maaaaa Big Congratulations [confetti popper emoji][drop confetti emoji][red balloon emoji][champagne emoji].”
Another X user with the handle @teacherbuknoy reposted Wrightson’s post and said, “Imagine having a name that sounds soooo gorgeous it sounds like a drag name [heart eyes emoji].”
“Frontline Pilipinas” airs Monday to Friday, 6:30 to 7:30 P.M. Wrightson is also a regular judge in all three seasons of the reality competition “RuPaul’s Drag Race Philippines.”
