Aubrey Miles and Troy Montero are the ultimate couple fitness goals, with their ripped physique and active lifestyle the envy of many. But they also shared that the inspiration to be fit has rubbed off on their kids as well.

“So we have a nice home gym that we built in the house. And we don’t have to tell them, ‘hey you need to work out.’ They’ll do it on their own kasi (because) they see us,” Montero told INQUIRER.net in an interview on Sunday, Aug. 18.

Miles, who with Montero recently hosted the launch of a fitness and health drink, said, “they think that everyone works out. It’s just the lifestyle for them. They think na (that) everyone has a gym in the house. Kasi (because) that’s what they see.”

The couple was blessed with two kids: son Hunter is born in 2008, and daughter Rocket born ten years later. Miles has a son from a former relationship, Maurie who is in his early 20s now.

Miles said even in food and nutrition, the kids seem to have also adopted their parents’ lifestyle. “Even the way we eat in the house, whatever I get, that’s it. Unless it’s a weekend, they want pizza. But in food, we’re also somehow not strict, but more limited lang (only), healthy-healthy.”

She added: “My kids now, every time we’re out abroad, or anywhere, they just order water. They’re just probably copying me, because I only order water. But I let them drink juice, but they’ll just be, ‘no, just water.’ So really, they copy. Even though you don’t say to them, they’ll just follow kasi (because) they think you’re right.”

Montero agreed, and said, “I think it’s really important kasi (because) the kids will see you, the biggest example is what they see. And sometimes I can see, they didn’t clean up after, the weights. In my mind, ‘oh they’re working out. That’s good.’ They did it on their own na (already). So I think it’s good to show them, set a good example.”

Miles also shared: “My eldest, he likes working out, like, just weight training. Our second one, he likes swimming, Jiu-Jitsu. [He’s in] La Salle. He wants to play basketball kasi matangkad (because he’s tall), but that’s always full. So [it’s] swimming and Jiu Jitsu.”

As for the couple, they have their own fitness routines, and rarely work out together. When one goes out for a physical activity, the other one sits it out, and they take turns. But they still do some things together.

“We like things that you can do as a couple. And then there’s a lot of work out we can do together. We also do spinning classes,” Montero said. Miles also revealed that they enjoy circuit training together.

“I can say probably I got her more into biking, and then she really got me more into yoga. She tried to get me into wall climbing. But I have a little bit of fear of heights, but she tried, but she got me into yoga, which I’m grateful for,” Montero shared.

Miles also said they got into triathlon together. “But during the [COVID-19] pandemic, we stopped. And then everything kinda changed. And now we hardly go out. We only do trainings inside. We do spinning inside,” she said, noting how their outdoor activities lessened.

She also said nutrition plays the bigger role in their fitness journey, more than working out. “We like a little bit of help… Because a little bit of help won’t hurt [if] it complements, and you see the result. We like it. We don’t mind a little bit of help here and there. I still like to eat rice so, like, I select my good carbs. I like my ulam (viand). I eat normal, [but] I watch the amount,” Miles shared.

As for Montero, he’s watching his carbohydrate intake, he said. “Sana (hopefully) you have a diet and a workout that is steady, and then you can just look at your goals and adjust… I try to limit my carbs, higher protein, lower carbs. But of course, you need, like of course, good carbs, for your energy and things like that. But this is going to help out a lot, for a lot of people, a little bit of help,” he said.

Miles is hoping she and Montero will still be able to sustain their healthy lifestyle for as long as they live. “I want to, until I’m 80. Actually pinag-uusapan namin (we’re talking about it), when I’m 80 what can I do? Mostly your joints talaga eh (really), I need to protect my joints, my core,” she said.

She said she transforms into a different person when she goes on without any workout for three straight days, that is why she does not see herself ever stopping getting into fitness. “I feel like my fitness talaga (really) is my top three priority. Top one, siyempre (of course), family, then my fitness. I grew up with fitness.

Montero, meanwhile, encouraged other couples to start or continue their fitness activities even after having children. “When you become a parent and your priorities change, try to have a workout schedule that’s very easy for you. Something that is in the house, or maybe near the house, something on the way to work.”

He continued: “[Because] as soon as you have [a gym that is really far], or it’s very difficult to access, you’re gonna skip it once, skip it twice, skip it three times, and then so on, so forth. So it should be something that you should work in your schedule. It should be very accessible. Try to do something that’s time management…because, of course, you want to spend so much time with your family.”

As for Miles, she said, “find your happy workout. You know, try and try. Anything that you think that you can do, try it. If you don’t like it, move on. It’s okay. For me just find it, then do it at home, not everything [has to be] at the gym. I work out in the house.”

She added: “As long as you have a little space na (that) will fit three people, then you can do push ups like this. And kung hindi talaga ma-work out (if it will not work out), then watch your food intake. I think you really need to choose your battle, hindi pwedeng wala (you should not have nothing). So you cannot work out? Then do your balanced diet.”
