Rica Peralejo couldn’t help but weigh in on the video message of two-time Olympic gold medalist Carlos Yulo to his mother Angelica, saying it was “distasteful,” but understandable following the “abuse” that he suffered from his parent.

On her Threads page Wednesday, August 7, Peralejo said that while some would find the gymnast’s response video to his mother “distasteful,” one must remember that what his mother did was hurtful to him, given the power that parents yield over their children.

“Saw the sad Carlos Yulo response to his mother and I know many find it distasteful and yet, naiintindihan ko sya because masakit talaga ang ginawa ng nanay nya. Iba ang power ng magulang sa isang anak, lalo na with their kind of relationship na para syang ‘mommyger,’” she said.

While the actress believed that Yulo should have “done better” in addressing the squabble, she said Yulo must have gone through “deep” pain.

“Definitely, he could have done better by staying quiet but the pain must be so deep he needed to practice his agency to not feel crushed,” she said.

In a separate post, Peralejo agreed to one @ma.buendia’s two cents about “toxic parenting,” saying abusers ensure their actions “make sense” so they can justify their action.

“Feeling ko din the abuse has to make sense so they will say it is right kahit hindi. If not kasi, what did they get the pain for? ‘Okay naman akong lumaki,’ is such a telling statement (I feel like the abuse has to make sense so they would say it’s right even if it’s not. If not, what did they get the pain for? ‘I grew up well’ is such a telling statement),” she said.

Despite Yulo’s two-time gold medal win, the athlete made headlines after Angelica’s social media posts seemingly undermined her son’s successful Olympics campaign. This led to Yulo addressing his side of the story in a video earlier this week, saying his mother “hiding and handling [his prize money] without his consent,” among other topics.

Angelica then tearfully apologized to Yulo in a press conference last August 7, while claiming that she’s “just being a mother” to him. The athlete has yet to respond to his mother’s statement, as of press time.

Amid the ongoing attention on their relationship, Film Development Council of the Philippines chairman and CEO Jose “Joey” Javier Reyes urged the media to not give attention to Angelica.
