Julia Barretto and Joshua Garcia had the chance to share what they’re grateful and sorry for, five years after their breakup.

During the press conference for their upcoming film “Un/Happy For You,” Barretto and Garcia took a pause when asked to share what they’re thankful and sorry for towards each other.

“Nagawa na namin ‘to dati eh (We did this before already),” the actress said, referring to their emotional “thank you and sorry scene” in the music video for Moira Dela Torre’s song “Paubaya” in February 2021.

Garcia then went first, thanking Barretto for “being open” about their on- and off-screen journey in the film.

“Thank you for being open sa journey natin sa pelikula. Sobrang thank you. Thank you dahil alam kong hindi ako mag-isa kasi kapag may mga araw na down ako, ina-assure mo ko. Nandiyan ka para alalayan ako,” he said.

(Thank you for being open about our journey in the film. Thank you, really. Thank you because you made me feel that I’m not alone. On days when I’m down, you assure me. You’re there to help me.)

The actor also thanked Barretto for being “generous” when they’re on the set.

“Generous ka sa acting na ibinibigay mo and hindi ka madamot. And wala akong dapat ika-sorry (You’re generous with your acting and you’re not selfish. And I don’t have anything to be sorry for),” he said.

Barretto expresses gratitude

On the other hand, Barretto expressed her gratitude to Garcia for accompanying her throughout the production of the film. “Genuinely, Josh, because naramdaman ko sa buong time na sinu-shoot natin ‘tong pelikulang na ‘to, inalalayan mo talaga ako.”

“Kilala mo ako, alam mo kapag medyo kinakabahan ako sa eksena, kapag medyo parang ‘yung energy ko nagbabago,” she continued.

(Genuinely, Josh, I felt that you took care of me throughout filming. You know me. You know when I’m nervous in a scene and when you feel my energy is changing.)

The actress then shared that Garcia would “always find ways to make sure everyone,” not only herself, is in a good place on set. She admitted that they’re both “crazy” for working together again, but she’s nonetheless thankful to him for being “so honest.”

“Thank you because you’re always asking kung okay ako and you’re always finding ways to make sure everything and everyone on the set, okay kaming lahat, hindi lang ako. Kaming lahat, iniisip mo sa set,” she said.

“Thank you because ikaw din, naging open to the idea of us working together again. We’re crazy for doing this but thank you for being open and being so generous and honest in all of our scenes,” she continued.

(Thank you because you’re always asking me if I’m okay and you’re always finding ways to make sure everything and everyone on the set are okay. Not just me. You think of everyone on set. Thank you because you also became open to the idea of us working together again. We’re crazy for doing this but thank you for being open and being so generous and honest in all of our scenes.)

Throughout the media con, the couple were pressed if they ever felt uncomfortable about joining forces in “Un/Happy For You” after a lot of time had passed. Both maintained that they were in a secure place in their lives to do so.

“Hindi maiiwasan humugot sa past. Pero bilang aktor, nasa sa iyo kung paano mo babawasan ang nararamdaman mo just to protect yourself from the pain na nararamdaman mo (You can’t control yourself from holding on to the past. But as an actor, it’s up to you on how you’ll control your emotions to protect yourself from the pain you felt),” Garcia said.

Barretto and Garcia, who dated from 2017 and 2019, worked together on various projects as the love team JoshLia. Some of their hit projects include “Vince and Kath and James” and “Ngayon at Kailanman.”

“Un/Happy For You” is their first time working together after four years. The Petersen Vargas-helmed film is also joined by Kaila Estrada, Aljon Mendoza, Ketchup Eusebio, and Nonie Buencamino.
