A resolution expressing the Senate’s profound sympathy and condolences on the passing of veteran film director and comic strip creator Carlo J. Caparas has been filed by Senate President Pro Tempore Jinggoy Estrada.

The veteran filmmaker died on May 25, as announced by his daughter, Peach, on social media. He was 80 years old.

In his Senate Resolution No. 1045, Estrada emphasized that the chamber has consistently recognized and paid tribute to remarkable Filipinos who made notable contributions to the promotion of Filipino culture.

“Caparas’ creative genius which spawned hundreds of unforgettable titles for the comic book industry, television and film undeniably contributed to the enrichment and growth of the local entertainment scene and promotion of Philippine arts,” Estrada’s resolution read.

Among Caparas’ best works include Panday, Bakekang, and Gagambino.

“His impressive body of published works reflecting the Filipino way of life and aspirations as well as the rich tradition of Philippine folklore belongs to the artistic and literary heritage of the country,” the resolution further stated.

Estrada said he considers Caparas’ passing as a “great loss” for the Philippine cinema and comics industry.

Caparas was named a National Artist of the Philippines for Visual Arts and Film by former president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in 2009, but it was nullified by the Supreme Court in July 2013.
