The 2024 Cannes Film Festival has officially kicked off, and aside from the Hollywood stars who are frequent attendees of the festival, Filipino celebrities have again graced the event to celebrate world cinema.

Beauty queen-actress Kylie Verzosa attended Cannes for the second time. On her Instagram account, the Miss International 2016 shared her stunning look on the red carpet.

“Walking on a dream [black heart emoji] 77th Cannes Film Festival Opening Ceremony. Thank you @festivaldecannes & @messika for having me, it was such a dream to be here again [cloud emoji] Premier night of Le Deuxièmie Acte [stars emoji],” she wrote in her caption.

Meanwhile, in an Instagram post shared by Filipina Hollywood journalist Janet Nepales, Hollywood breakout star Ruby Ruiz, Lorna Tolentino, Shaina Magdayao, Sylvia Sanchez, and Xian Lim were also at the festival attending the Cannes Director’s Fortnights where they have films that will be screened.

“Cannes Director’s Fortnights spotlight is on the PHILIPPINES for 2024 and our short film WALAY BALAY will be premiering this May 15. Truly an honor to be part of this very special experience,” wrote Magdayao on Instagram.

“Walay Balay” tells the portrait of a mother and daughter, evacuated during wartime to a safe neighborhood they will call home. It stars Magdayao and Ruiz, among others.

Meanwhile, Arvin Belarmino (Philippines) and Lomorpich Rithy (aka YoKi) (Cambodia) directed the short film “Silig,” starring Sanchez and Angel Aquino. It tells the story of a stubborn and feisty woman, dying from cancer, who returns to her hometown to organize her own cremation.

Belarmino’s short film “Radikals” is also set to compete at the Critics’ Week (La Semaine de la Critique) of the festival. Aside from the celebrities, Filipino filmmakers also attended to present their work and pitch their features in development at the Cannes Directors Fortnight Beach.

The Cannes Film Festival will run from May 14 to 25.
