Newly-crowned Miss Philippines Earth 2024 Irha Mel Alfeche is just the second Mindanaoan to win in the national pageant since its inception in 2001.

She was crowned in Talakag, Bukidnon, on May 11, 22 years since April Ross Perez from Zamboanga City was proclaimed winner in the Miss Philippines Earth pageant’s second edition in 2002.

Miss Philippines Earth 2024 is almost close to crowning its new owner as the delegates are now trimmed down to the Top 10. The Top 10 finalists were named during the coronation night tonight, Saturday, May 11, in the municipality of Talakag in Bukidnon.

Is it time for Mindanao to reclaim the Miss Philippines Earth crown?

Luzon and Metro Manila have been dominating the Miss Philippines Earth pageant since its establishment in 2001, with a total of 18 winners produced. And while Visayas already has three queens, only one winner from Mindanao has been crowned. There has also been one winner from an overseas Filipino community.

But with tonight’s coronation show set to be held in Bukidnon, and with formidable Mindanaoan delegates competing for the crown, a candidate from southern Philippines could claim the Miss Philippines Earth title once again.

Yllana Marie Aduana is set to relinquish her Miss Philippines Earth title to her successor tonight, and she shared the qualities she is looking for in the woman she would want to inherit the crown.

“I wish to see someone who’s hardworking, committed and purposeful. To wear this crown is not an easy task, believe me. It’s far from being a walk in the park,” she said in an emotional social media post on May 10.

There is a special reason Filipinos put beauty queens on a pedestal, and reigning Miss Philippines Earth Yllana Marie Aduana shared why titleholders and even aspirants are put in such a position.

“As Earth queens, too, we need people who can really look up to us, and who will be inspired with the way we speak, with the way we act, with the way we talk. This is how Earth queens are seen,” she said at the 2023 Miss Earth winners’ media conference held at Brittany Hotel in Bacoor, Cavite, on Tuesday, May 7.

The four queens of the 2023 Miss Earth pageant had an epic reunion in the Philippines in time for the Miss Philippines Earth 2024 pageant coronation night to be held on May 11 in Talakag, Bukidnon.

The Miss Earth pageant proclaims four new titleholders very year, the main winner and her three “elemental” queens. But most of the time, the last moment they are all seen together in the same place is during their coronation. And the 2023 batch got the rare occasion of being reunited in the Philippines.

Irha Alfeche from Matanao, Davao del Sur, earned her first medal from the 2024 Miss Philippines Earth pageant and topped the swimsuit competition held in Bukidnon on Saturday, May 4, a win that gives the national search a four-way battle for the crown.

The Mindanaoan lass becomes the fourth lady to win a gold medal in the pageant, the previous ones being Ansh Lichelle Jones from Zamboanga City for the evening gown competition, Sam Samara from Makati for the beach wear competition, and Ira Patricia Malaluan from Batangas City for the “Darling of the Press” poll.
