Andrea Brillantes said she has no idea if the story of well-loved Filipino mermaid Dyesebel would get a reboot on television, but she expressed interest for the role, saying it would be an honor to breathe new life into it.

In a chance interview with reporters on the sidelines of the media conference for her new TV series “High Street,” Brillantes was asked about the possible reboot for the character and she recalled that she actually auditioned for Dyesebel at GMA when she was just four years old.

“I’m a big fan kasi alam niyo naman na lagi akong nagsi-swimming, nagfe-freedive. So if pagbibigyan ako ng chance talaga, I would be so honored (I’m a big fan because I love to swim and go freediving. So if I’m given a chance to do it, I would be so honored),” she said.

When asked if past photos of her swimming are part of the preparation for the character, Brillantes insisted that she has no knowledge is such a project is in the works, and that she was only going swimming for fun.

Reports of Brillantes reprising Dyesebel circulated after entertainment insider Ogie Diaz said that a reboot is in the works in his showbiz vlog in December 2022.

Created by Mars Ravelo, Dyesebel is a Filipina mermaid who made her first appearance in “Pilipino Komiks #1” in 1952. She turns into a woman after engaging in a deal with a sea witch.

Among the actresses who brought Dyesebel to life in films and TV series were Marian Rivera, Anne Curtis, Vilma Santos, and Alice Dixson, just to name a few.

Meanwhile, in the same interview, Brillantes said that while she’s aware that “Senior High” would get a sequel, she didn’t expect that it would be done right away.

“Noong pinitch sa’kin itong ‘High Street,’ nagulat din ako. Nag-expect ako na [magkakaroon ng sequel ang ‘Senior High], pero hindi ko inexpect na ganito kabilis,” she said. (When ‘High Street was pitched to me, I was surprised. I expected that “Senior High” would get a sequel. But I didn’t expect it to be that fast.)
