Imelda Marcos-themed ‘Here Lies Love’ earns 4 Tony Award nominations

Here Lies Love,” which tells the story of former First Lady Imelda Marcos, bagged four nominations at the 2024 edition of the annual Tony Awards.

Based on the rise and fall of Marcos, the biographical musical earned four nominations at the Tony Awards which was announced on the latter’s official website last April 30.

“Here Lies Love” is co-written by Fatboy Slim and singer-songwriter David Byrne, which according to him, was inspired by a video of the former first lady dancing with Saudi Arabian magnate and arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi.

Slim and Byrne was considered for Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theater, and is expected to go against “Days of Wine and Roses,” “The Outsiders,” “Stereophonic,” and “Suffs.”

The musical was also nominated for Best Scenic Design of a Muscial with “Hell’s Kitchen,” “The Outsiders,” “Water for Elephants,” “Lempicka,” “Back to the Future: The Musical,” and “Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club.”

“Here Lies Love” also captivated the Tony Awards 2024 committee as it also earned a nominations for Best Choreography and Best Sound.

The musical’s official Instagram account also took to its platform to announce its recent milestones.

The musical, consisting of mostly Filipino performers, ended its Broadway run in November 26 of last year, with reports citing low ticket sales.

Award-winning theater actress Lea Salonga is one of “Here Lies Love’s” producers, and starred as Aurora Aquino from its July 11 to August 13 run. Vina Morales then took on the role from September 22 to October 22 run.

Aquino is the mother of the late lawmaker Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino Jr.
