MANILA, Philippines – Cathryn Bauer’s book, “Acupressure for Everybody,” offers beneficial tips to relieve common ailments. For starters, this small but impressive success story:
During an expedition, a wasp stung one of the guides. Bauer alleviated the victim’s misery by putting some crushed ice cubes on the location of the sting and applying acupressure to stop the swelling and relieve the pain. After 10 minutes, the swelling subsided!
Bauer explains, “Acupressure can provide fast symptomatic relief. It requires no special tools—which makes it useful for travellers, pregnant and lactating women, and those with drug allergies.”

Common ailments that can be alleviated by self-care acupressure: Altitude sickness, asthma, acne, boil, eyestrain, canker sore, colds, cramps, eczema, fatigue, fainting spells, flatulence, headache, heartburn, insomnia, joint pain, menstrual cramps, stomach discomfort, and varicose veins. The book allots a special section for infants and children, especially for problems that involve diaper rash, bedwetting and teething.
Bauer has also written another book, “Acupressure for Women.” In one case, “Tomiko, a Japanese-American woman sought treatment for her menopausal symptoms. Urinary incontinence made restful sleeping impossible. This made her susceptible to colds and other infections—which were relieved by herbal remedies and acupressure!”
It would be wonderful if students and parents were taught basic acupressure, so that we can have a healthier society. If we knew how to deal with common ailments, doctors can then focus on more serious diseases. It’s simple and practical—and easy to learn!
