Filipino-American online influencer Bretman Rock clapped back at a Filipino gym coach who posted a video content that made use of a homophobic remark as his motivation to lift weights.

On TikTok, Edison Vargas, a fitness coach, uploaded a clip of himself lifting weights in the gym. In the caption of the video, he wrote, “Bakla ako ‘pag hindi ko nabuhat ‘to.” (I’m gay if I didn’t pull this weight.)

When his video circulated first on TikTok, and gained numerous reactions online, Rock left a comment on the fitness coach’s post, writing, “Only if you were as strong as your braces, trying to keep your teeth together, you wouldn’t need motivation.”

“Lastly, I’m so glad I’m not panget (ugly), weak, and straight,” added the popular content creator.

After the comment of the beauty influencer, Vargas posted a video explaining that he’s just following an online trend.

“Before ako magpost, tumingin muna ako ng ibang content sa TikTok na katulad ng ipopost ko,” showing a couple of videos where he gained inspiration from. (Before I post, I first look at other content on TikTok that is similar to what I am going to post.)

“Hindi ko po siya pinost to harm your feelings. Wala po akong ibang intensyon na saktan kayo o maoffend kayo,” he said. (I didn’t post it to hurt your feelings. I have no other intention to hurt you or offend you.)

He remarked that he has clients from the LGBTQ+ community, and he sees them as “strong” individuals “who endure despite the judgment they receive from society.”

The fitness coach has since deleted his original post. At the same time, he thanked the commenters on his post for making him aware of what was wrong in his content.

Meanwhile, Rock was recently honored by the Hawaii House of Representatives for his work in bringing entertainment and positive influence to his audience as a content creator.
