The 2018 romantic comedy hit “Crazy Rich Asians” is being adapted into a musical and is set to make its Broadway debut.
On Instagram, Kevin Kwan, who authored the “Crazy Rich Asians” book series, announced the news, saying he was excited to work once more with Jon M. Chu, who directed the film alongside the musical’s creative team.
“I’m beyond excited to be working with [Chu] again and an amazing tribe of musical geniuses and the wonderful team at [Warner Bros. Theatre Ventures] to bring my book to Broadway. Who wants to audition?” he wrote.
As reported by Playbill, the musical will be scored by Tony-nominated composer Helen Park (KPOP) as well as feature a book by Leah Nanako Winkler and lyrics by Tony-nominated songwriter Amanda Green and Singaporean songwriter Tat Tong.
Tong took to Instagram to express his joy to be working with the musical creatives and teased that “he can’t wait for the world to see” what they are creating.
“There’s still a lot of work to be done, but this is definitely one of those pinch-me moments that a much younger me could never have dreamed of. I am so honored to be working with legends,” he wrote.
“Thanks for being so welcoming to me on my first ever musical project; I’m honestly learning so much from y’all every day. I can’t wait for the world to see this!! But for now, it’s back to work.” continued the songwriter.
“Crazy Rich Asians” received critical acclaim and commercial success, making almost $240 million in the box office. Despite only having a budget of $30 million for its production, it became the highest-grossing romantic comedy of the 2010s.
The film adaptation features Constance Wu, Gemma Chan, Michelle Yeoh, Awkwafina, Lisa Lu, Henry Golding and Filipino actress-host Kris Aquino in a cameo role.
