Following the appointment of its new chairperson and CEO, Jose Javier Reyes, the Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) is set to recognize Filipino artists including the Gloria Romero, Boots Anson-Rodrigo, and the late Jaclyn Jose for their enormous contribution to the Filipino film industry.

Aside from the three aforementioned, Dr, Nicanor Tingson, Dr. Clodualdo del Mundo Jr., Armando “Bing” Lao, Teddy Co, Society of Filipino Archivists for Film (SOFIA), and ABS-CBN Film Restoration (Sagip Pelikula) are also among the honorees in this year’s  “Parangal ng Sining,” an annual bestowment of recognition to exemplary Filipino artists, scholars, and organizations for their significant contributions to the development of Philippine cinema.

During a media call on April 8, FDCP chairman Reyes explained the council’s objective to honor these artists for the excellent work they give to their craft, which contributes to the overall importance of Philippine cinema.

“The decision to take Tita Boots (Anson-Rodrigo) is because of the work she has done for MOWELFUND [Movie Workers Welfare Foundation]. She’s the mother of MOWELFUND. Pararangalan si Tita Boots hindi bilang artista kundi bilang isang lider. Sa kanyang ipinakitang lideratura sa Philippine cinema. Sa kanyang pag-aaruga sa film workers through MOWELFUND,” he said.

“And of course, the ultimate movie queen, Gloria Romero. There’s no question about Gloria Romero. She’s 90 years old. Although she’s been honored before by FDCP, there’s never enough honor for a woman who represents the Philippine cinema,” continued the new chair.

“And of course, the sad turn of events for Jaclyn Jose. Kahit ano pa ang sabihin, Jaclyn Jose is more than a meme. She is the only Filipina actress to bag a major international award [69th Cannes Film Festival, May 2016]. Let that be based on record. Napakalaking kawalan sa Philippine cinema si Jaclyn Jose dahil hanggang ngayon, siya pa lang ang natatanging Filipino actress na nagwagi sa Cannes Film Festival,” Reyes added.

With the theme of Old Hollywood, the awarding ceremony will be held on April 19, 2024 at Seda Vertis North, Quezon City.
