Song Kang, best known for starring in Korean TV series “Sweet Home” and “Nevertheless,” is confirmed to begin his mandatory military service on April 2.
“We express deep gratitude to the fans who always show love for actor Song Kang, and this is a notice regarding Song Kang’s enlistment,” the actor’s talent agency Namoo Actors said in a statement obtained by Korean media outlet Soompi on Thursday, Feb. 29.
“Song Kang will be enlisting as an active duty soldier of the [Republic of Korea] Army on Tuesday, April 2,” it further read.
The talent management company noted that there will be no official event when he enters the recruit training center, and that he will be “enlisting privately to prevent safety accidents due to congestion on site.”
“We ask for the warm love and support of many people in order for Song Kang to return in good health with greater maturity after diligently completing his mandatory service,” the statement concluded.
All able-bodied South Korean men ages 18 to 28 are obliged to serve in the military for at least 18 months.
Song visited the Philippines in March last year and held a fan meeting in Manila. During the event, fans of the Korean actor surprised him with a video compilation, which moved him to tears.
“I really did not think I was going to cry. I am really surprised,” he said. “I am always thankful for all your support. I hope you can all be happy, and you can all be healthy. I am so honored.”
