Beauty queen-actress Maureen Wroblewitz weighed in on the topic of the potential side effects of hormonal contraceptives, sharing her journey with cystic acne that affected her mood and confidence.

On Instagram, the Asia’s Next Top Model Cycle 5 winner shared a video showing her before-and-after looks, wherein she had her clear skin while on birth control, transitioning to when she had acne breakouts when she stopped using it. She detailed her experience using contraceptives for her irregular periods.

“I wanted to share my acne journey with you. l used to have the clearest skin. Even as a teenager, I’d get a pimple here and there, but my skin was mostly clear. I went on birth control for my irregular periods at 18 (l’d get heavy periods twice a month that would last 8 days) I had so many side effects and kept changing brands to look for one that worked for me. They especially affected my mood,” she wrote.

“I finally decided to completely stop at 22. A few months later I started getting more and more breakouts but they were pretty manageable until I moved to LA. I started getting cystic acne (climate, food and stress),” added the beauty queen.

Wroblewitz admitted that she felt embarrassed with her acne breakouts and that she always tried to find ways to cover them up. She said that she is making an effort to find the products that will help her skin.

“I felt so self-conscious about it, I didn’t want to leave the house without makeup. And even while wearing makeup I would hide my face with my hair, which of course made it worse. I have since spent so much money on skincare and nothing worked until I started researching the products I used for pore-clogging ingredients. I think I’m finally finding products that work for my acne-prone skin but I’m still not completely there yet,” she said.

The former “Eat Bulaga” co-host stressed that acne does not define individuals and hopes her journey will reach and inspire those who are still on the same path of struggle.

“I just want to say that acne doesn’t define you! You’re beautiful no matter what. I hope this reaches those especially who need to hear this,” she concluded.

Netizens took to the comment section of the beauty queen’s post to share about their personal experiences and to thank Wroblewitz for opening up the topic on contraceptives and acne.

“Omg girl, same here! I was on the same birth control for 10 years… but I kept getting migraines, and when I went to get my next supply the doctor told me I should have never been on the pill in the first place because of the heightened risk of stroke. I’ve been off it now for 4 years and my skin has been up & down ever since! We should definitely normalize talking about this — it can be so upsetting! Sending love!” replied IG user @hellotessa

“This happened to me just two years ago. Never been on Birth control even, but after my 26th bday, I had the worst breakouts ever! Couldn’t leave home cause I felt so ashamed of it. This is not talked about much but I did a lot of research & I swear it’s normal for us women!” said netizen @chaocampo
