Songwriting a ‘coping mechanism’ for Vilmark

After his father’s death last year, GMA Music recording artist Vilmark didn’t think he had it in him to continue pursuing a career as a singer-songwriter. But with the support of his family and loved ones, he realized that he still had a lot of music to give.

“Luckily, I was able to use music as a coping mechanism to show how I really feel and what’s inside my heart. The people around me encouraged me to just keep composing and writing songs,” he told the Inquirer in a Zoom conference for his latest single, “INOWY (I’m Not Okay Without You).”

Vilmark also realized that perhaps it is through music that he could continue honoring his late father. “People tell me that that they know my dad is proud. And that inspires me to move forward with my music career,” added Vilmark, who finished first runner-up in the “The Clash” Season 4.

His previous release, “Lisan,” was born of out grief and sadness. “INOWY” is the sequel and talks about moving on. For someone who draws inspiration from personal experiences, he said writing the song wasn’t an easy process.

Juggling music, day job

“This time, it’s about accepting the fact that you’re not OK and allowing yourself to be vulnerable and just feel the pain of a given moment,” said Vilmark, who’s hoping that “INOWY” can get the same traction as “Lisan,” which was covered by Jennylyn Mercado for her primetime series “Love. Die. Repeat.”

“She told me that it was a beautiful song and was perfect for the series,” he related.

Vilmark, who works full time as an instrumentation engineer, had just finished his shift before doing the interview. Though it can be challenging to juggle music and a day job, he believes that he can always make time for the things he loves.

“If you’re passionate about something, you will find time for it. And my passion for music will always be there. Even if it’s difficult, you have to make sacrifices,” he said.

Quitting his job to focus on music crossed his mind, Vilmark admitted, but practicality prevailed. “There was a point when I did contemplate resigning. But I realized that, at the moment, music isn’t as stable. I’m my family’s breadwinner; I need the day job,” he said. “But I’m thankful because GMA adjusts to my schedule, which allows me to pursue projects related to music.”

Creative side

Besides, music provides him much-needed respite from work. “My career as a music artist is a whole new world. It allows me to show a different side to me. When I get stressed at work, I get to explore the creative side of me,” he said.

After “INOWY,” Vilmark hopes to put out more singles and gather enough material for a full album. “I now have three singles … and I want to continue writing my own songs. I have already set aside a couple more that are just waiting for approval. But I’m also open to working with other composers and seeing how it works,” he said.
