Liza Soberano is off to a good start in her Hollywood acting debut, as early reviews for “Lisa Frankenstein” are lauding her for her performance as Taffy.

On Thursday, February 1, American producer and director Joe Russo (not to be confused with the Joe Russo of Marvel movies), known for his work on Bruce Willis’ “Hard Kill,” took to X (formerly Twitter) to commend the Filipina actress.

“Movies like LISA FRANKENSTEIN can be great vehicles to break new stars, and Zelda Williams and Diablo Cody found a superstar in Liza Soberano, who steals every scene she’s in as Lisa’s step-sister, Taffy,” wrote the Netflix director.

“Lisa Frankenstein” advance screenings in the United States are currently underway, and Filipino fans can expect more commentary in the next few days that will give a glimpse into the portrayal of Soberano as the Philippines awaits its release.

The “Forevermore” star will be stepping into the cheerleader shoes of Taffy, the step-sister of the lead character, Lisa (Kathryn Newton). As described in the plot, Soberano’s character is set to break the stereotype of the popular, beautiful mean girl that viewers often see in the movies, as Taffy is empathetic and naturally perfect.

A netizen on X pointed out the importance of the “Alone/Together” actress’ role in “Lisa Frankenstein,” noting that the film wouldn’t work without the character.

“An actress is not merely an extra if her role is indispensable in the movie. Removing Taffy would change the dynamics between Lisa and her stepmom and, in effect, change the story. Taffy is the antithesis of both Lisa and her mom. Contradictions are the hallmark of a great movie,” wrote user @onetamad2016.

According to film director Zelda Williams, whose debut film is “Lisa Frankenstein,” the 26-year-old Filipina actress is undeniably perfect for the role. The cast members, Newton and Cole Sprouse, also tagged Soberano as their favorite character in the film.

Soberano is currently doing promotional rounds for the movie as the theatrical release date awaits on February 9, with Philippine cinemas on February 7th.
