Another Filipino actress is making a name for herself in Hollywood: 63-year-old Ruby Ruiz who marked her career milestone when she made her Hollywood debut and attended the premiere night of the Nicole Kidman-starrer series “Expats.”
Ruiz raised the Philippine flag when she walked the red carpet recently at the Museum of Modern Art (the Museum of Modern Art) in New York for the first screening of “Expats,” rubbing elbows with her co-stars Kidman, Brian Tee, and Ji-young Yoo.
On Instagram, the actress shared a few photos and short clips that show her posing in front of the cameras and sharing a drink with her co-stars during the series premiere night, saying it’s an experience she will never forget.
“What an incredible experience I will always remember! My first premiere for ‘Expats’ was held at MoMA,” she wrote.
“Expats” is based on the 2016 novel “The Expatriates,” adopted for television under award-winning director Lulu Wang. It tells the harrowing story of a group of women living in Hong Kong. The series stars Kidman who plays Margaret, the wife of Clark (Tee) who moves to Hong Kong to be with him and their three children.
Meanwhile, Ruiz plays Essie, the struggling helper of Margaret.
The TV series will premier on January 26.
In a previous interview with Vogue Philippines, the veteran actress said that the six-episode series is a must-watch for Filipinos working abroad.
“I think that it is a must that Filipino diasporas around the world, not just overseas migrant workers, watch Expats because they can identify with the plight of Essie—the sacrifices and hard work to earn a living away from home,” she said.
Wang, who brought “Expats” to life, commended the “Linlang” actress’ work ethic, saying she was the missing part that completed the project.
“Well, Ruby is incredible,” Wang said to ABS-CBN. “As soon as I saw her audition, I knew she was the one. I knew she was the heart and soul that we needed for this series.”
Given the milestone, Filipino celebrities have expressed their gladness and how proud they are of Ruiz’s Hollywood debut.
Several celebrities congratulated the seasoned actress, who has played roles in many television shows in the country. Among these celebrities are Anne Curtis, Bela Padilla, Benjamin Alves, Alex Gonzaga and Shaina Magdayao.
Former ABS-CBN head Charo Santos also congratulated Ruiz.
