Second, third, tenth chances

/ 07:45 PM August 11, 2012

Despite the cynicism and tendency to rush to judgment that often characterizes show biz and its fans, let’s make this season different by more charitably supporting moves to give some controversial celebrities a second, or even a third, chance to regain lost ground, find favor again with viewers, and shine up their fading stars.

For starters, let’s support the fresh comeback moves of Andi Eigenmann, BB Gandanghari and Snooky Serna.

Slowpoke no more

Snooky was a top child star who top-billed one movie after another for years on end. Even in her teen years, she was a popular film star. Eventually, however, her pagong (slowpoke) ways and occasionally idiosyncratic behavior turned off producers, and marital problems compounded her woes.

But it’s great to hear that Snooky, now in her mid-40s, will be making a movie again, this time playing the mother of Coco

Martin. Yes, she looks too young to portray the now 30-ish actor’s mom, but perhaps they’ll age her?

In any case, let’s support Snooky’s comeback bid in the movies, because she’s proven in the past that she’s a good dramatic actress. And she swears that her old pagong days are finally over. So, welcome back, Snooky!

Woman-man

As for BB Gandanghari, she’s had a relatively hard time finding roles that are “exactly right” for her post-“transformation” persona now as a woman.

Yes, she’s lovely and svelte, but her original male persona still obtrudes in some people’s minds. So, when she plays women, they feel a certain “disconnect.”

Well, perhaps her new TV assignment, the TV5 fantasy-drama series, “Enchanted Garden,” will help ease the hurdle. In the new show, BB plays Michiko, a character who is the bridge between the real world and “Eden.”

The exotic and fantasticating nature of the series makes it easier for viewers to accept BB, the transsexual and transgender beauty, as a “fully” female star.

Interestingly, however, the acting assignment is rendered more challenging by a tantalizing twist: When “Michiko” is in “Eden,” BB will be playing her—as a man! Something to look forward to, indeed. Let’s hope BB can pull it off!

Single mom

Finally, former teen fave and now single mom Andi Eigenmann is now playing it “young-adult” and “sexier” by way of her comeback teleserye, “Kahit Puso’y Masugatan.”

The shift is logical due to the actress’ new persona in the public’s view as a single mom, but we trust that it won’t limit the range of roles that will be offered to her.

After all, she is still quite young and deserves to play a great variety of roles, not just one “fallen” woman after another.

Third chance

What about the “third-chance” come-backers? Given the ups and downs of the roller-coaster ride that is the local show biz scene, there are quite a number of them.

But they, too, should be allowed every chance to make it again.

And what about the confirmed and unrepentant serial recidivist?
