It was a moment of sheer nostalgia for Lea Salonga after she reunited with veteran theater and screen actor Jonathan Pryce in London, where the latter showed support for the Filipino pride during the West End run of Stephen Sondheim’s “Old Friends.”
Salonga and Pryce starred as Kim and the Engineer, respectively, in the original West End and Original Broadway runs of “Miss Saigon” in 1989 and 1991.
The actress took to her Instagram account on Wednesday, Jan. 3, to share her reunion with Pryce in what seemed to be a photo taken from Salonga’s dressing room.
“When a former co-star and absolute acting giant shows up!!! Thank you for being there, dear Jonathan,” she said in the caption.
Entertainment journalist Gretchen Fullido and “RuPaul’s Drag Race” alum Manila Luzon showed their excitement for their reunion in the comments of Salonga’s post.
Boublil & Schönberg’s classic musical “Miss Saigon” tells the story of Vietnamese orphan Kim who falls in love with American GI named Chris at the backdrop of the Vietnam war. Tran Van Dinh, also called the Engineer, is the main antagonist in the musical, though he would at first play cupid between Kim and Chris.
The award-winning play is set to make a comeback to the Philippine stage in March 2024, although the cast is yet to be revealed, as of this writing.
Pryce has starred in several film, TV, and theater productions throughout his career, but is known among the new generation of audiences as Prince Philip in the final two seasons of “The Crown,” a real-life adaptation of the British royals.
