Vilma Santos hopes to do another socially ‘woke’ drama in the future

After making headlines with her Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) 2023 Best Actress win, Vilma Santos said she already has plans lined up for her future projects but is still considering her options at the moment.
Santos admitted during a Dec. 31 episode of DZRH’s “Showbiz Talk Ganern” that she’s still “thinking” of her next project, but is hoping to do “at least one” dramatic role in 2024, especially those that have a socially “woke” theme.
“Modesty aside, may mga nakalatag naman sa akin ngayon (I have been receiving offers). But I’m still thinking [of my next project]. Nothing is final at this point. I’m looking forward to doing at least even just one movie next year,” she said.
But if she has the chance, Santos would like to do another movie similar to her past works such as 1984’s “Sister Stella L,” 1998’s “Bata Bata Paano ka Ginawa,” and 2002’s “Dekada ‘70.”
The three aforementioned movies all follow the drama genre, and each earned a Gawad Urian for Best Actress win for the screen veteran.
“I’m dreaming to do another ‘Dekada 70,’ yung mga ganu’n (something like that). Kahit isa lang for [2024]. Nami-miss ko uli yung mga ganu’ng klaseng pelikula (Even just one film with the same genre for 2024. I miss working on those kinds of films),” she said.
Santos bagged her fifth Best Actress win at the MMFF for her portrayal of the character Azon in “When I Met You in Tokyo” opposite her longtime onscreen partner Christopher de Leon.
The screen veteran also won MMFF Best Actress for her work in “Mano Po III: My Love (2004),” “Imortal (1989),” “Karma (1981),” and “Burlesk Queen (1977).” Her recent win at the annual festival ties her with fellow actress Maricel Soriano who also won five Best Actress awards.
