The 2024 Golden Globes ceremony is happening this Sunday, Jan. 7, and Filipino-American stand-up comedian Jo Koy is set to host this year’s award show.
In every award show, the role of the host is vital, being in charge of keeping the momentum going as everyone anticipates who will emerge as winners. So let’s get to know Jo Koy and the other celebrity hosts who graced the Golden Globe stage.
Born Joseph Glenn Herbert, Jo Koy’s parents met in the Philippines when his father served in the United States Air Force and got based in the country. In 1994, after the comedian dropped out of the university, he joined a Las Vegas comic-drama club. He then joined the open mic night in Catch a Rising Star comedy club at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino.
Jo Koy had his first television breakthrough on BET’s Comic View for two seasons. He became a regular guest at Chelsea Handler’s roundtable discussion on E! Chelsea Lately talk show, where he has made more than 100 appearances.
In 2021, Jo Koy released his autobiography, “Mixed Plate: Chronicles of an All-American Combo.” He recently starred in the comedy film “Easter Sunday,” the first major Hollywood film with a Filipino cast.
It will be the Fil-Am comedian’s first time hosting the show, and this will also mark a milestone for the Philippines, as Jo Koy is the first Filipino to head the show, and he said he intends to make his Filipino family proud.
Other hosts
Before Jo Koy, the iconic duo Tina Fey and Amy Poehler came back to host the 2021 Golden Globes after their three-year run as hosts. In 2019, the great duo of Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh also graced the awarding stage.
For five different years, Ricky Gervais hosted the ceremony, while Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers and Jerrod Carmichael served as first-time hosts in 2017, 2018 and 2022, respectively.
