Filipino film ‘Iti Mapukpukaw’ misses Oscars 2024 shortlist

“Iti Mapukpukaw” fell short of making the cut to the shortlist of films vying for the Best International Feature Film award at the 96th Academy Awards. 

The award-giving body announced the shortlists in the 10 categories via its website on Friday, Dec. 22 (Thursday, Dec. 21 in the United States.)

The 15 movies included in the International Feature Film category, where the Filipino-Ilocano animated film was submitted, are the following:

“Iti Mapukpukaw,” helmed by director Carl Joseph Papa, was announced as the country’s official entry to the Oscars last September.

“Iti Mapukpukaw,” which stars Carlo Aquino, Gio Gahol and Dolly de Leon, already won several awards including the 2023 Cinemalaya Philippine Film Festival’s Best Film, the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC) for full-length film award, and best supporting actress honor for De Leon.

The Oscars nominations voting will run from Jan. 11 to 16. The official nominees will be announced on Jan. 23.
