Martin Nievera recently celebrated his 30 colorful years in the biz. He had sung his way through every twist and turn.
Mart’s love songs became the story of his life—and ours as well. How he managed to rise after every fall makes us admire him all the more.
He shared with us some of his thoughts:
What was the turning point in your career?
Every day is a turning point for me. But after my separation from Pops when my phone stopped ringing, and then it started to ring again, that was the turning point. It was the bouncing back that turned me around.
What’s the secret of your staying power?
Not knowing that I have any [staying] power at all … I am just so blessed.
Of all your songs, which one is closest to your heart?
“Say That You Love Me” is my favorite one to sing because it’s full of emotion and range. [I like] “You Are My Song” and “Kahit Isang Saglit,” too, but my all-time fave is my version of Kenny Loggins’ “Forever.” It’s my song for all those whom I cannot, do not and will not live without. And those are the people I sing for.
What’s the biggest lesson you learned along the way?
That what took you a lifetime to achieve can be taken away in the blink of an eye. So, embrace every gig, whether big or small. My message to all those who followed me, left me, loved me and hated all I stand for: I am because of you.

New talk show
Where TV5’s “Paparazzi” ends, “Ang Latest” begins (this weekend). After two years of intrigues and controversies, it’s time for a makeover.
Change is always good, so we won’t stagnate. At press time, details of the reformatted talk show are still under wraps.
For now, I just want to thank everyone who supported “Paparazzi” from Day 1. I have grown and learned much in the show. There were issues hurled our way but we all stood together as a team. Stay tuned!
Big winner
The biggest winner in the 2012 New York Festivals is GMA News TV Channel 11. It bagged two Silver World medals for its documentary program, “Front Row.” It also received two finalist certificates for the documentary program, “Reel Time” and a third finalist certificate for the docu-drama special, “Pluma: Si Rizal, Ang Dakilang Manunulat.”
“Front Row” (8:45 p.m. on Saturdays) and “Reel Time” (8:45 p.m. on Sundays) are breaking new ground in Philippine television by letting the subjects themselves tell their stories.
