Cameron Mackintosh’s new production of Boublil & Schönberg’s classic musical “Miss Saigon” will be staged in Manila in March 2024, organizer GMG Productions, in association with GWB Entertainment, announced on Friday, Oct. 13.

Mackintosh expressed his excitement in bringing the musical to the Philippines, saying it is “the best production of Saigon [he has] ever produced, with one of the most brilliant casts that have ever performed the show around the world.”

GMG Productions’ CEO Carlos Candal, meanwhile, underscored how Filipinos have a “deep connection” with the musical as it has showcased the talents of several Filipino artists.

“The production has given talents like Lea Salonga, Jon Jon Briones, Joanna Ampil, Rachelle Ann Go, and countless others a platform to showcase their extraordinary skills and passion, and we’re excited to welcome a new company of world-class performers to share the new staging of this phenomenal production” Candal added.

GWB Entertainment director Torben Brookman, for his part, declared that “heat will be on in Manila” as the audience will be treated to “the best production of this incredible show.”

“Miss Saigon”—a retelling of Giacomo Puccini’s classic opera, Madame Butterfly—follows the story of Kim, a young Vietnamese woman who navigates the chaos of Saigon during the Vietnam War, falls in love with an American G.I. named Chris, and embarks on an extraordinary three-year quest for reunion, all while harboring a heart-wrenching secret.

Mackintosh’s production of the classic musical premiered in London in 1989, and has since been seen by 38 million people worldwide, staged in 32 countries and over 350 cities, and in 15 different languages.

The new production of “Miss Saigon,” directed by Laurence Connor with musical staging by Bob Avian and additional choreography by Geoffrey Garratt, will be staged at The Theatre at Solaire in Manila. Tickets will be on sale starting Nov. 6.  /ra
