Actor JM de Guzman has a background in mixed martial arts, something that he thinks will be helpful when his character in the new season of “The Iron Heart” is introduced.
Playing Bro. Joseph, a religious leader who believes he has a close connection with the Lord, de Guzman will also have action scenes in the series topbilled by Richard Gutierrez.
“To be honest, meron na akong nabasa na gagawing difficult action scenes. Siguro may konti kang advantage kapag nag-MMA ka. I used to train sa MMA. I fought before when I was in college. Sobrang hirap niya. It requires mental focus, physical and emotional din. Sa tingin ko, makakatulong nang malaki sa fight scenes,” he said during a recent zoom conference for the series. (To be honest, from what I have already read, I will be doing difficult action scenes. Maybe there’s a slight advantage when you do MMA. I used to train in MMA. It’s so difficult. It requires mental focus, as well as physical and emotional. I think it will help greatly in the fight scenes).
De Guzman believes that all fight scenes are difficult, admitting that he has been injured and has gotten someone injured in the past. What is needed is proper training in executing fight scenes.
Admittedly, the actor follows the series and is aware of how fight scenes are executed.
“Siguro alam ko kasi na intense ang action scenes ng “The Iron Heart.” Dahan-dahan na rin akong nagpre-prepare physically like running, stretching para maiwasan ang injury,” he said. (Maybe I know that the action scenes in “the Iron Heart” are intense. I am slowly preparing physically like running, stretching so that I can avoid injury).
Actually, he is so intrigued at how the fast-paced action scenes are executed.
“What I love the most about the series is ‘yung unpredictability ng series. It’s intense. Paano nagagawa iyon nang ganoon kabilis, ‘yung execution ng action scenes, ‘yung drama. Parang sobrang galing (How can they do the scenes that fast, the execution of the action scenes. It’s so great),” he said. /ra
