Social media celebrity Mimiyuuuh is standing by her love and dating advice that one should not date someone who is penniless, a remark that earned her the ire of some netizens who branded it as “matapobre,” or snobbish.

In a video posted on her Facebook page, Mimiyuuuh admitted that she was disappointed that some netizens were displeased by her comments during a video feature by lifestyle magazine Cosmopolitan Philippines, but that she is maintaining her stance on the matter.

“I said what I said about huwag makipag-date sa taong walang pera. Walang pera, hindi naman ibig sabihin na mag-date kayo ng milyonaryo o bilyonaryo, o may mga Porsche… hindi po gan’un, opo. Mag-date kayo ng someone na may drive, someone na kayang dalhin ang sarili, at ‘yung di mangungutang at aasa sa inyo. ‘Yun lang po ‘yun, period,” she said.

(I said what I said about dating someone with no money. When I say “no money,” it doesn’t mean that you should date a millionaire or a billionaire or someone who has a Porsche, that’s not it. Date someone who has a drive to do well, someone who can fend for themselves, and someone who doesn’t rely on you for financial support. That’s it, period.)

Money matters

During the video feature, Mimiyuuh gave advice to one reader complaining of an ex-partner who could not pay off a huge debt despite her several demands for payment. The video was uploaded on its official YouTube channel on Thursday, June 29. The content creator responded by saying that in the first place, the reader shouldn’t have entered a relationship with somebody who’s financially unable to support their partner.

“‘Yan ang aking lesson learned, never ever date someone na walang pera,” she said. “Hindi ko naman sinasabi na it [money] really matters… actually, it matters. Dapat kasi stable ka muna sa sarili mo bago ka magdagdag ng tao sa buhay mo.”

(That’s a lesson I learned, never ever date someone with no money… I’m not saying money really matters. Actually, on second thought, it matters. You have to be stable before you choose to commit to someone else.)

Relationships, responsibilities

Consistent with her pronouncements, Mimiyuuuh in her video vlog then addressed those who described her as a snob who pointed that she has forgotten that she, too, had come from humble beginnings. She claimed that while she did come from a less-fortunate family, she made sure to prioritize her loved ones and career first.

“Kaya medyo nalungkot po ako sa mga taong sinasabing matapobre daw ako, na parang hindi daw po ako galing sa hirap. Galing po ako sa hirap. Pero nakipagdate po ba ako nang wala akong pera? Hindi po,” she said. “Maybe because wala pong nagkakagusto sa akin during that time, but at the same time, alam ko po kasi ang priority ko at that time. Priority ko po kasi na ayusin ‘yung buhay ko, family ko, career ko, at priority ko ring gawing buo ang sarili ko bago po ako magdagdag ng ibang tao sa buhay ko. Kasi nga po, ayaw kong maging pabigat sa ibang tao.”

(That’s why it made me sad when people called me a snob, as if I didn’t come from a less-fortunate family. I came from a less-fortunate family. But did I date someone when I didn’t have money? No. Maybe because no one liked me during that time, but at the same time, I had different priorities at that time. My priority then was to fix myself, family, career, and to make sure that I’m whole before adding someone else in my life. Because I don’t want to give another person a hard time.)

The social media star also advised her followers to know their worth when it comes to romance, as she stressed that getting into a relationship is a “responsibility.”

“Pwede niyo naman po i-date kahit sinong gusto niyo, opo. Pero kung ikaw na po mismo hindi mo kayang masustentuhan yung sarili mo, yung mga basic needs and wants mo, magdadagdag ka pa ba ng bagong responsibility? Opo, a relationship [is a] responsibility. Ang akin lang, complete yourself first. Make yourself whole t’as maghanap kayo ng someone na whole kasi ‘yun ang deserve mo,” she further added.

(You may date anyone you want. But if you can’t fend for yourself, such as provide for  your basic needs and wants, are you willing to have another responsibility? Yes, a relationship is a responsibility. For me, complete yourself first. Make yourself whole then look for someone who’s whole because it’s something you deserve.)

Mimiyuuuh’s follow-up statement caught the attention of netizens on social media, where majority agreed with her relationship advice, as seen on the comments of INQUIRER.net’s Facebook post.

Meanwhile, one Gino Monreal Hinolan pointed out on Facebook that Mimiyuuuh makes a good point with her statement, saying that it’s hard to look for “true love” when one doesn’t have the means to do so.

“Mga mam/ sir MIMIYUH has the right to demand who to date and not to date. Dahil yung demand nya meron siya at kaya nya ibigay pabalik. We know how successful she is now,” he added.

Mimiyuuuh caught the attention of netizens last May after buying her first personal car, saying it’s a “dream come true.” The vlogger also revealed in February of this year that her house has been renovated. EDV
