MANILA, Philippines – Some Catholic bishops on Wednesday expressed sadness over the death of Rodolfo Vera “Dolphy” Quizon with a prayer that God would soon bring him to His kingdom and appoint him as heaven’s “court jester” to make it a happier place.

Cubao Bishop Honesto Ongtioco on Wednesday said the actor’s death was again a reminder that there was an end to everything. But he stressed that while there was life, one must discover and develop his talents in service of others.

“It is important that we discover and develop the talents the Lord has given us for the service of others and also to thank the giver of blessings and talents,” said Ongtioco.

The entertainment icon, who died Tuesday night at the Makati Medical Center, had starred in and produced hundreds of movies that have touched the lives of ordinary Filipinos.

Dolphy would have turned 84 on July 25.

Sorsogon Bishop Arturo Bastes said many members of the clergy, including himself, were saddened by Dolphy’s death. “We pray that the Lord will bring him soon to His kingdom and appoint him as His court jester to make heaven a merrier state,” said Bastes.

“May Dolphy find true happiness in God’s house, our true home,” added Lipa Archbishop Ramon Arguelles.

For his part, Jaro Archbishop Angel Lagdameo said, “We thank God for the gift of Dolphy, who served the country with his more than 200 films, making all kinds of viewers cry and laugh through their shared experiences in life.”  The prelate described Dolphy as a “classic entertainer.”
