Six months after Cara Delevingne was spotted looking disheveled and out of sorts at the Van Nuys airport in Los Angeles, California in the U.S. following reports of her substance abuse, the British supermodel revealed that those paparazzi photos served as a wakeup call to be sober.
Delevingne opened up about her sobriety journey and mental health at a cover interview with Vogue USA last March 8, where she described the airport photos as a “source of overwhelming shame and embarrassment.”
“I hadn’t slept. I was not okay. It’s heartbreaking because I thought I was having fun, but at some point it was like, Okay, I don’t look well. You know, sometimes you need a reality check, so in a way those pictures were something to be grateful for,” she said, where she noted that she was on her way to a work engagement at that time.
The supermodel also admitted that getting addicted to drugs and alcohol made her “feel invincible,” even if she hadn’t seen a therapist in “three years.”
“There’s an element of feeling invincible when I’m on drugs. I put myself in danger in those moments because I don’t care about my life,” she began. “I hadn’t seen a therapist in three years. I kind of pushed everyone away, which made me realize how much I was in a bad place. I always thought that the work needs to be done when the times are bad, but actually the work needs to be done when they’re good.”

The “Suicide Squad” star, who admitted that her mother’s struggles with addiction affected her childhood, then revealed that getting into rehab was the “best decision” she ever made.
“From September, I just needed support. I needed to start reaching out. And my old friends I’ve known since I was 13, all came over and we started crying. They looked at me and said, ‘You deserve a chance to have joy,’” she said.
Delevingne also reminded her followers in her personal Instagram page that there will “always [be] hope” after “difficult circumstances.”
“Every single story is important and this is mine. We are all human. Of course we will fall and make mistakes. We will walk through really hard things in life but it’s how we get back up again. We can learn and heal. Hard times are not final. Difficult circumstances don’t have to hold us down or define us. There is hope. Always hope,” she said in the caption.
The supermodel also expressed her support to those who are going through tough times in their lives, saying that they are “not alone.”
“Right here, I am grateful and proud and ready for all that is to come. Remember it is never [too late to] change the direction of your story. To anyone out there still struggling, don’t give up, you are not alone,” she said.
Aside from modeling, Delevingne dabbled into acting where she appeared in the films “Anna Karenina,” “Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets,” “Her Smell,” and “Life in a Year.”
