Eighteen years after the release of the hit song “Jopay,” known for its lyrics “Jopay, kumusta ka na,” OPM band Mayonnaise was finally able to share the spotlight with Sexbomb’s Jopay Paguia-Zamora in person.

Paguia finally had the chance to meet Mayonnaise during the band’s concert in Lucena, Quezon Province, as part of their 20th anniversary tour, as seen in the musicians’ Instagram account on Saturday, March 4.

However, it’s unclear if this was the first time that Paguia and the OPM band met in person.

“Basta, mahal ko ‘yung ginagawa ko. Kasi noong nagsisimula kami mag-banda, gumawa lang kami ng isang awitin, simpleng awitin lang. Masaya ako na narinig ni Jopay ang kanta namin noong 2003. Pinadala ko sa kanya ‘yung demo tape and noong nilabas namin ‘yung awit noong 2005, 2023 na, sinusuportahan niyo pa rin ang awitin na ‘to,” Macalino said to the audience, as seen in the video.

(What matters is that I love what I’m doing. When we first started out, we made a simple song. I’m happy that Jopay heard our song in 2003. I sent a demo tape to her and when we released the song in 2005, it’s already 2023 but you’re still supportive of the song.

Macalino and the Sexbomb dancer also shared that the demo tape was sent to her after the latter’s group concert in 2003. Paguia also shared that she was supposed to be included in the song’s music video, but plans fizzled out due to busy schedules.

“Trivia lang, binigay sa akin ni Monty ‘yung demo tape tapos di ko na alam kung nagmamadali kami n’un [sa concert]. Pag-uwi ko ng bahay, pinatugtog ng mama ko tapos sabi, ‘Anak, ikaw ata ‘yung nasa [kanta].’ And then, sayang. [Wala yung music video] kasi busy ako n’un,”

(Just a trivia, Monty gave me the demo tape and I didn’t know what to expect since we were in a rush during a concert. When I got home, my mother played the tape and said, ‘My child, you might be the one they’re referring to in the song. Then, I feel bad since we were not able to film the music video since I was busy at that time.)

OPM fans expressed their delight over Paguia and Mayonnaise’s memorable encounter during the concert.

One @vinescueta said, “Sa wakas sa ilang dekada nila pangangamusta sa inyo man finally nagkita [na] kayo!” (Finally, after decades of asking how you are, you finally met in person!)

Another @ljaguinaldo_ said, “Angas!! Kasama ung legit na Jopay!!” (Wow, you’re with the legit Jopay!)

Macalino earlier revealed that the hit 2005 song was inspired by Paguia herself after the former saw her acting performance at a Lenten special episode of the noontime variety show “Eat Bulaga,” as seen in a January 2023 episode of the magazine show “Kapuso Mo, Jessica Soho.” EDV
