Dolly de Leon loses BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress to Irish thespian Kerry Condon

Dolly de Leon has missed out in her bid for Best Supporting Actress at the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA), as “The Banshees of Inisherin” star Kerry Condon took home the coveted award.
Condon bested five other nominees in the Best Supporting Actress category at the BAFTA awards in London on Sunday, Feb. 19 (early Monday morning, Feb. 20, Philippine Standard Time) to bring home the coveted award.
“Thanks a million! Really, this means so much to me! I have to thank Sir Alan Parker who gave me my very first job when I was 16 years old. And then I have to thank Martin. Thank you for this part, Mart, for all the parts that you’ve given me throughout my career… they made me feel so proud to be Irish-born,” Condon said, referring to Martin McDonagh, the film’s director, writer and producer.
“And the crew, because one of the best parts of our job is working with the crew. And the amazing cast who are all so kind and generous to me. And I have to thank my horses and my dogs because they showed me so much love, gave me so much meaning in my life,” she added.
Before she received her award, though, some of those who were invited to the British academy awards claimed that the presenter, American actor Troy Kotsur, wrongfully read Carey Mulligan’s name for best actress, but then he quickly recovered and said Condon’s name.
The Irish actress then immediately took her award and proceeded with her speech. The snafu, however, was not shown during the live telecast.
Aside from de Leon, also nominated for the award are Angela Basset for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”, Hong Chau for “The Whale”, Jamie Lee Curtis for “Everything Everywhere All At Once”, and Mulligan for “She Said”.

Despite the loss, the “Triangle of Sadness” star told the British Film Institute (BFI) that being the first Filipina to be nominated at the British award giving body is a “huge honor,” while being in the film helped her grow as an actress.
“They say I’m the first Filipina to be nominated so it’s a huge honor for me, and to be part of a monumental film like ‘Triangle of Sadness’, I’m so proud to be here because it’s such a great production and working with [Ruben] Östlund was an eye-opening experience for me,” de Leon said.

De Leon was named as Best Supporting Actress at the Guldbagge Awards, known as Sweden’s equivalent of the Academy Awards, for her role as Abigail in the Ruben Östlund-helmed satirical black comedy in January 2023.
Apart from the BAFTAs, the actress also made history as the first Filipina to be nominated for the Golden Globe Awards. EDV
